How Buying a Home in the “Off-Season” Can Be One of the Smartest Moves to Make
The most common time to buy a home is the spring and summer seasons; kids are out of school, most people have open schedules, there’s more inventory, and homes look beautiful. If spring/summer is a good time to sell, then fall/winter is the best time to buy — and below are a few reasons why this rings true.
1) You have less competition!
With all of the holidays and unpredictable weather that comes with fall and winter, less people are interested in buying homes. There’s too much going on, Christmas is around the corner, it’s cold (and possibly snowing), so buying a home is not the first thing people are vying to do. That being said, having fewer buyers on the market gives you a better fighting chance at getting your offer in before someone else!
2) You have negotiating power!
As the buyer, you have the upper hand during the off-season. Sellers whose homes didn’t sell during the prime season become more eager during the off-season. And sellers will be more willing to come down in price — or even be more apt to help with closing costs or repairs so that they can sell before Christmas hits. As a first time homebuyer this is huge! Being able to get a deal on your first home is GOLD!
As a first-time homebuyer, your dream home may be unrealistic (at least in the prime season of the market). Come fall and winter, your dream home may be more in reach due to the two factors talked about above. Having less competition and having the upper hand in negotiating could save you hundreds of dollars on your loan! Most people don’t want to buy in the off-season, but I say it’s the perfect time! Who could ask for a better Christmas present for themselves? Lets go get that home this off-season!
